24.

Andrea remained as low to the ground as possible, creeping to the edge of the metal box she was hiding behind and peering around the corner at the stranger. He was moving to the left, away from her, examining the boxes on that side. Her gaze shifted to the rooftop door, twenty yards away but still in plain sight. So close, yet maddeningly out of reach.

From her vantage point Andrea watched as her pursuer moved systematically from box to box. Though it was chilly out, the sudden shiver she felt was not because of the weather but catching sight of the gun in his hand. It was also not her own safety that made her anxious but the thought of what Ava must be up against. Dying itself was not her greatest fear right now. Instead, it was the fact that she had to survive to make sure her daughter made it out alive. That she wasn’t left alone.

As the man moved to the corner of the building, she eased away from the metal box, moving backwards while keeping her body low in a crouch, the box providing cover as she retreated. She eventually came to the next one and slid around behind it. She glanced to the right, where a larger shape took form—some kind of HVAC unit, standing maybe four feet tall and six feet wide. The fans mounted inside the thing hummed softly.

He had reached the edge of the building, the wall coming up about to his waist. He placed his hand against it as he peered over the side. He seemed casual, out for a smoke and then some fresh air. But after a moment he turned in her general direction and began his careful examination of the obstacles on that side of the roof. “Why not just show yourself?” He asked, startling her. “Save us all the time and trouble of rooting you out...what do you say?”

Quickly, she hunkered over and shuffled to the HVAC housing, peering through the grate work at him once she made it there. He had stopped, perhaps hearing the crunch of gravel as she made her move, but he was not looking directly at the unit. She could see him now, his gaze drifting across the entire stretch of the roof. Just standing there and surveying the whole area.

She glanced toward the roof, which was a tad closer now. Another plan was forming in her mind, a reckless idea but one the few options that remained: She thought that she might be able to make a dash for the door and down the stairs before he could catch her. Certainly, she was closer to the door than he was...at least for now. She could get there much faster than he could. That wasn’t really a question. The real question was if he would fire his gun at her or not. Had he been given the order to kill her or just find her? Andrea worried that it was the former.

Gauging the distance, she knew that she had only a few moments to make the decision.
